VINNY LUNAR - Chauffeur - EP REVIEW

VINNY LUNAR

Chauffeur

Sydney, Australia

Music has always been a great method of discussing the world's most common issues, whether that’s spreading awareness or becoming a protest but what Australian artist Vinny Lunar has done with their latest EP is nothing short of epic. Utilising their talent they have been able to vocalise a world flipped on its head where the white guy is the brown guy's driver and what that could mean for society. This has been achieved in just five tracks, leaving the listener with food for thought and considering the world from a new perspective.

EP ‘Chauffeur’ kicks off with the deep, smooth enticing beats of ‘On The Outside’. Here we are introduced to Vinny’s amazing vocals and beautiful rap segments. The ethereal sounds provided in the backing match with the lyrics perfectly being they discuss the idea of living up in a cloud and the artist needing to expand his world.

This takes us nicely into the second track ‘Hai Rama’ where we seem to be able to enjoy something completely different to what was offered in the first track. There seems to be a fusion of Indian roots and R&B dance, which leads to an amazing catchy piece. The bouncy beat on this will have you moving in no time, especially when combined with the buttery smooth sensual vocals.

From this amazing experience, we are taken to the midpoint of this EP ‘In My Blood’. This track looks to focus on the artist needing to break free from hiding his true self in a society that doesn’t seem to want to truly accept him and his culture. Using talking points that many can relate to, for example staying out of the sun in order to not appear darker, to become a power anthem of self-acceptance and enhancing the pride of your culture. This is delivered with an ever-changing flow, my favourite being the chorus which brings the feeling of Serengeti-style flow, like a lion chasing its prey, bringing about the powerful feeling that this track provides.

Once we have enjoyed that amazing experience of power we are taken to the penultimate track in ‘Chandra’. This feels like a much more reflective track, featuring some gorgeous claps, and what seems could be sitar instrument pieces. Combine this with the classical R&B deep bass beat and the gorgeous introduction of synth we have a track that leaves you in an almost meditative state.

This is when we are taken into the final track, featuring lyrics we may all recognise ‘where do I go what do I do’ which seems like it could be a nod to the infamous Notorious BIG which would be a great stylistic choice to have taken here. This bright, hook-heavy track, which utilises the now familiar clap-style beat, with a high synth placed alongside it, is perfect to see out this amazing EP.

This EP overall has been so enjoyable and powerful, from the political to the relatable, through to the beats and superb production, this features some awesome tracks that are ready to be played to the masses.
