Calgary-based multi-instrumentalist Taylor Lang steps into a new chapter with his heartfelt debut solo single "Broke But Never Broken," blending alt-folk and acoustic elements.

Taylor Lang’s Solo Debut: "Broke But Never Broken"

Canadian multi-instrumentalist Taylor Lang is stepping into a new chapter of his musical journey with the release of his debut solo single, "Broke But Never Broken. The Calgary-based artist presents a raw, emotionally charged track that reflects on his upbringing and the sacrifices made by his mother—an experience he couldn’t fully understand until later in life.

After years of playing in bands, Lang’s solo project is a refreshing shift, allowing him to break free from the expectations that once defined his sound. "Broke But Never Broken" is a deeply personal reflection of his life, blending folk, fingerstyle guitar, and a subtle, haunting soundscape. Influenced by notable artists like Dan Mangan, City & Colour, and Jon Gomm, Lang has crafted a song that slowly draws listeners in, gripping them with its quiet intensity and emotional depth.

A New Direction

Lang’s career spans over a decade, initially rising to prominence with the award-winning grunge rock band Crack the Lens and later leading the folk-rock trio Blaeser, which earned a nomination at the YYCMA. However, his solo material marks a significant evolution in his songwriting and recording process. Produced by JUNO-winning producer Russell Broom, known for his work with Jann Arden and Ian Tyson, "Broke But Never Broken" represents a more intimate and introspective style for Lang.

Recorded in January 2024, the track strips back much of the traditional band sound, focusing on Lang’s acoustic guitar, warm vocals, and a narrative-driven approach. It’s clear this song is meant to resonate deeply with anyone who has ever faced adversity or reflected on the sacrifices made by those who raised them. The emotional vulnerability shines through in both the lyrics and the subtle yet powerful production.

Early Praise

Even ahead of its official release, "Broke But Never Broken" has garnered attention. The track has been described as “honest, warm, and refreshingly down to earth” by Wolf in a Suit and praised for its “crisply delivered lead vocals that sit with ease amidst the rolling guitars” by Music on the Moon.

As Lang continues to carve out a solo career, this release sets the tone for what promises to be an exciting journey. His ability to blend alt-folk, indie, and acoustic influences with such emotional precision is sure to resonate with fans and new listeners alike.

"Broke But Never Broken" is available on all major streaming platforms.
