Tiny Guitar Champion
Jam on the Go: The NUX MP-2 Mighty Plug Headphone Amp Outshines the Competition

The Mustang Micro from Fender is a tremendous piece of kit. A little headphone amp that allows you to play guitar wherever you may be. But it does have its downsides. For one, the price. It’s a little steep for what it can do, and what it can do is pretty bare bones as well! To solve both of these problems in one fell swoop comes the Mighty Plug from NUX. More specifically, the MP-2 Mighty Plug. A headphone amp that is compact, rechargeable, and will out-pace a Mustang Micro in a feature race any day of the week.

Everything You Need, Without Breaking The Bank

The factor that sets the Mighty Plug apart is in the software. The app that comes with the MP-2 is chock full of sliders to slide, nobs to turn and buttons to push. Though other headphone amps do come with these kinds of adjustments, none of them are as intuitive or as in-depth as the Mighty Plug’s. In the app, you can pick a preset and then start customising. Be that simple EQ adjustments, or perhaps changing the cab simulator that the whole sound is going through. Throw on a noise gate, add some pedals to change the mood and then, once all the fiddling is over and done with, you save it as a preset so you can flick back to it at the press of a button. Easy as pie!

Sound Quality: From Crystal Clear to Heavy Distortion

For When an Amp is Too Much Trouble

Price Point: Premium Features Without the Premium Price

The Mighty Plug’s sound is clear, wide, and capable. The amp will handle everything you plug into it with the utmost fidelity, which you would expect from NUX in any case. At £59.00 this headphone amp is a no-brainer if you’re looking for a cheap and effective way to practice your shredding with ease. The Mighty Plugs do come in beefier models, like the MP-3 Mighty Plug Pro, which adds some fancier touches and quality-of-life improvements. And yet, at under £60 on Andertons, there’s really nothing more you could ask for in the price bracket. So if you were looking at the Mustang Micro, maybe save yourself a few and dig into the MP-2. A tremendous little pocket rocket.
