San Francisco’s Shawn Stedman Channels Analog Grit and DIY Spirit on Debut EP
On December 7, 2024, Shawn Stedman’s solo project Meat in Space releases its debut EP, Tangerine. Rooted in a dedication to analogue recording, the EP blends garage rock, grunge, and psych influences into a raw, authentic sonic journey. The standout title track delivers an emotive exploration of overcoming adversity, wrapped in a driving groove and searing guitars.
The Story Behind Tangerine
The EP’s title track emerged almost fully formed, written and recorded in just two days. Using citrus imagery as a metaphor for breaking through emotional despondency, "Tangerine" serves as both a personal statement and a universal anthem of resilience.
“This song came like a lightning bolt,” says Stedman. “Heavy on symbolism, it captures the essence of breaking free from darker days.”
Analog Craftsmanship
Recorded entirely on analogue equipment—including an Ampex ATR-102 reel-to-reel and a Tascam 388 8-track recorder—Tangerine captures the warmth and imperfections of tape. The production incorporates techniques like tape saturation, backwards effects, and direct-input overdrive, creating a cohesive sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
“This process brought organic bursts of tape-saturated guitar and vocals,” Stedman explains. “The limitations of analogue pushed the compositions into tight, no-frills arrangements.”
A DIY Ethos with Broad Appeal
Meat in Space draws inspiration from artists like Ty Segall, Nirvana, and King Gizzard, reflecting a DIY ethos that appeals to fans of garage rock, 90s alternative, and psych rock.
“The EP is an homage to a hands-on, raw approach to music-making,” Stedman shares.
