A slow-burning fusion of soul, shoegaze and hip-hop, ‘Phases’ captures love, loss, and emotional limbo in a cinematic alt-pop debut.
Lenny Jennings, a South African-born, London-based guitarist and songwriter, officially steps into the spotlight with his debut single “Phases”, released independently on 18 April 2025. Featuring South African Music Award-winner Evida, the track offers an immersive and emotionally rich experience that navigates the push and pull of relationships, personal growth, and artistic awakening.
Phases is a slow-burning sonic conversation—a layered fusion of alternative rock, trap, psychedelic soul, and dream pop that speaks to the emotional in-between. It’s a song about transitions, about moments of clarity that emerge in the middle of chaos. At its heart is Jennings’ guitar work: raw, expressive, and deliberately unfiltered.
“Phases is a track about the in-between — the push and pull of love, loss, and everything you can’t quite name,” the artist notes. “At its core is Leonard Jennings’ unmistakable guitar: raw, emotive, and unfiltered — a voice in its own right.”
The song began as a late-night riff recorded in Jennings’ home studio, eventually evolving into something much deeper. Long-time friend and collaborator Evida—known offstage as Liam Jones—joined the process, shaping the production into a richly textured soundscape. As Evida brought his own reflections into the project, Jennings found himself living through the song’s narrative, confronting the emotional fallout of a long-term relationship.
