DAK HOLIDAY - Hollywood (How Are You?) Ft. Que Violette
United States, Chicago
For those of you who missed it, we included Dak Holiday in our first-ever Top 10 Hip-Hop and Rap back in April. We then reached out for an exclusive TJPL NEWS interview. Tamara Jenna got into the juicy detail behind the artist.. but first, let's refresh.
'HOLLYWOOD HOW ARE YOU?' Is the first release by Artist/Songwriter/Producer Dak Holiday. This track covers the topic of fantasies surrounding fame as a rockstar but addresses all the worst parts of drug addiction, alcoholism, and dying young.
Opening with a solo electric guitar and distant vocals before suddenly being hit by the twist of dark 808s and synths, this track makes noise quite early on but in a good way! Shortly after it strips back down allowing for the vocals - we thought this was a good move. There are many chops and turns present in the track which we really enjoyed. The overall tone of the production is reminiscent of the likes of MGK and Juice Wrld but with elements of classic and pure hard rock and roll! Awesome work from Dak Holiday and Que Violette.
INTERVIEW
Artist/Band Name
Dak Holiday! Pleasure to meet your acquaintance :)
When was this track/project released or when is it happening?
Hollywood how are you? ft. Que Violette Is my first release as Dak Holiday. The song came out Mar31st!
Where are you based?
Chicago, born and raised. Currently based in the Lakeview area.
When creating the track/tracks, who were your biggest artistic influences?
My all time favorite artist is Lil Peep... the catchiness in his writing is beyond genius so I try to achieve the same level of earworminess, although my vocal style and delivery is probably more similar to Tom Delonge of Blink 182. As for the instrumentals, on this track I told the producers 2Star and Prodbynam to make something that sounds like 1999 grunge and punk collided w/ 2022 hyperpop.... I think they hit it spot on...
What motivates you to create?
I'm just making the music I would want to listen to.. music moves me and heals my heart.... if I can make something that serves as my therapy I imagine it will do the same for someone else as well.
How do you develop your artistic skills?
I'm pretty much always studying the work of other artists.. not just in my genre or even in the medium of music at all..... like I find Warhol's work and career to be extremely inspiring. He captivated an audience for 3 decades before the internet... if that's not impressive I don't know what is.
What are your ultimate career goals?
I want to change music.... It may sound overly ambitious but I want to bring bak Rock music (or at least my version of it to the mainstream).... R&B, Pop and Hip Hop have overshadowed Rock music and its subgenres for the better part of 30 years.... I'd like to change that and I think I can.
How do you collaborate with other artists?
Very carefully... lol kidding. I try to give my collaborators space to breathe their own life into the track... After all, the point of a collaboration is to create something neither of us could have made on our own.
How would you define your sound?
Punk / Pop Punk vocal styles over bass heavy pop and hyperpop beats... not that much to it I suppose.
What are your future plans?
A number of collaborations w/ Que Violette are done, near done, or just getting started. We plan to roll those tracks out over the next 4-5 months.
What can we look forward to for the rest of 2022?
Lots of collabs w/ Que Violette and some collabs w/ other artists I met recently as well. In short. Collabs. Collabs. Collabs!
