SUMMERTIME REVIEW

Danish artist #BREGN sent us his project #Summertime to review this week! #Summertime is, well, just that! Encapsulated within lo-fi acoustics and smooth vocal layers, this is a track that takes you into the sun and wind with minimal effort from the artist! One thing that I love about this song is the way that the different guitar elements take their moment in the sunshine without losing the listener. The vocals are husky and smooth and the lyrics pull you in! I decided to reach out to #BREGN to find out more in an exclusive TJPL NEWS interview. Read below to find out some of the creative processes behind the track and to find out what else #BREGN has in store for us in the near future!

INTERVIEW

What would be your ultimate achievement for your latest single?

If a person is feeling sad and that person feels relieved, heard and acknowledged by listening to the song that would be a great achievement.

Is there a particular vision that you had when putting the song together?

Sonically I wanted to write a summer song that sounded really dry and warm. I also wanted to write a song for persons that are less visible in the summertime.

If you could define music in one short sentence (no cheating) what would you say?

Crating meaningful art by moving air in an interesting and/or beautiful way.

One artist you would bring back to life?

This is a tough one because there are many. Elliott Smith would definitely be one of them.

When did you first realise that you had the potential to be an artist? Is there a memory that has stuck in your mind as the turning point for you?

I have not thought about myself as having certain potential for being an artist. Then again I don’t think I have chosen to be an artists. I think being an artist for me is inevitable and is a non-separable part of me being the creative person I am. The creativity musically all started when I was about 6 years old.

Do you play any instruments? If not, is there a specific one that you'd like to learn?

I play piano, guitar and sing (and played the clarinet for a couple of years as well). I have mostly been self-taught.

How would you define your sound?

At the moment I try achieve a warm vintage sound with some modern twists. If you mean genre I think it could fit in the alternative folk, psychedelic, singer-songwriter category.

What's the story behind your artist name?

My name is BREGNHOLDT so in short that is BREGN:-) I think my music is only for the few but the fans would be the BREGNies (=brain’ies) cause it is for them that I create and the empowerment they hopefully get from listening to the music.

What is the biggest challenge you've faced as an artist?

There a quite some challenges being an artist but also a lot of benefits. Some of the challenges become the benefits when I overcome them. One of the challenge is to survive from being an artist. I figured out that being completely independent from the music industry and having a full time job for survival is the best fit at the moment. This means that I am often pretty exhausted when I in the end of the day creative music. I couldn’t live without writing music though.

What are your future plans? What can we look forward to for the rest of 2022?

I am putting the final touch on the next single release at this moment and plan for a 4th single later this year.

Where would you like to be 5 years from now?

I would really love to stay humble and keep releasing music and grow artistically / musically as well as be a meaningful resonating voice for other people even if it is for the few.
