Ho Jo Fro Releases New Wave-Inspired Anthem "Mudville (Well, Well, Well, Well)"

From the vibrant music scene of Charlottesville, Virginia, Ho Jo Fro presents their newest single, "Mudville (Well, Well, Well, Well)," an engaging rock anthem blending elements of new wave and classic rock. Written by band member Paul R Johnson and recorded at Tim Ryan's Studio 607 in Ivy, VA, the song captures a bittersweet story of love lost and the enduring emotional echoes it leaves behind.

A Unique Love Story Set to Music

At the heart of Mudville lies a poignant narrative delivered through a captivating duet between Iyla Elise and Paul R Johnson. The lyrics depict a chance meeting between two former lovers, whose strained conversation gradually reveals the mutual pain they endured when their relationship fell apart. The chorus—crafted to be an irresistible sing-along—provides a sense of unity and catharsis. Paul reflects, “Love brings us together, but love gone bad rips us apart. Over time, though, even the deepest wounds begin to heal.”

Dynamic Soundscapes and Memorable Musical Elements

Musically, Mudville is a masterclass in keeping listeners engaged. From the delayed trumpet entrance by Will Evans to the fiery snare drum solo by Jim Ralston, the track is built to surprise and captivate. Tim Ryan, who also contributed guitar and bass, recorded the song in his Studio 607, known for hosting local rock talents like Kingdom of Mustang and The Gladstones. Paul shares, “Jim's snare drum solo was my fevered wish to recreate the energy of ‘Ballroom Blitz’ by Sweet and ‘Do Ya’ by ELO.”

One of the standout moments in the recording process came when Paul let out a raw, emotional scream, which Tim decided to leave in the mix. This unexpected addition, combined with energetic drumming and crunchy guitar riffs, propels the song toward its climactic conclusion. The result is a sound that's equal parts nostalgic and fresh, paying homage to influences like The Who while also tapping into the infectious energy of new wave.

Looking Ahead

While Mudville is already making waves, Ho Jo Fro isn’t stopping there. Their next project will feature a duet with Top 40 hitmaker Dean Friedman, known for tracks like "Ariel" and "McDonald's Girl." As Paul, one-third of Team Derringer from the Derringer Discoveries podcast, enters his fifth year of podcasting in 2025, he remains committed to connecting and collaborating with fellow music lovers worldwide.
