A Raw, Acoustic Journey Through Stories of Healing, Regret, and Resilience

Acoustic duo G.L.A.D. (Gospel Land American Division) delivers their soul-stirring EP, U-TURN, released on November 1st, 2024. The EP, recorded at Galley Tower Studios near the French border, features heartfelt storytelling woven into the fabric of Americana and alt-folk traditions.

The creative collaboration of seasoned singer-songwriter B.T. West and Eastern European vocalist and percussionist Ina East is at the heart of this project. Together with violinist Andreas Waeldele and jazz drummer Mathis Wunderlich, G.L.A.D. crafts a raw, intimate sound that resonates deeply with listeners.

A Return to Storytelling Traditions

U-TURN reflects on universal themes of shame, healing, regret, and resilience. Drawing from B.T. West’s personal experiences and historical family tales, the EP tells vivid stories through tracks like “Red Stain,” which delves into shame and recovery, and “Winter of 1946,” inspired by West’s late mother’s recollections of post-WWII hardship.

For those seeking a first listen, “Turn” and “By Morning” are standout tracks, blending stripped-down arrangements with hauntingly emotive performances.

Unique Production Process

The recording of U-TURN intentionally embraced simplicity. Using vintage equipment and live, one-room setups, the duo aimed to create an atmosphere that echoes Johnny Cash’s iconic Folsom Prison recording. The analog warmth of Galley Tower Studios is palpable, with acoustic guitar drop tunings replacing traditional bass and brushes-only drums adding subtle dynamics.

“Our process was raw and confessional,” says West. “It’s about leaving space for each voice and instrument, resisting the urge to overproduce.”

The Message of U-TURN

With U-TURN, G.L.A.D. invites listeners to reconnect with authentic, unfiltered music. The EP is not only a homage to Americana and folk roots but also a modest protest against the dominance of machine-made production.

G.L.A.D.’s journey is one of resilience, healing, and storytelling. Although recent health setbacks have postponed live performances, plans for a live-concert recording in a historic barn studio are underway, promising even more rich, analog soundscapes.
