FEATURED ARTIST *DJ G-String* In the Mirror - EP REVIEW + INTERVIEW

FEATURED ARTIST

DJ G-String

Chicago, United States

BACKGROUND

DJ G-String's first EP called In the Mirror is a catalog of her top releases since 2020 but in trance form. She has always loved trance music and wanted to give her songs a flavor of that style. She is usually a vocal house producer but felt that the lyrics and emotions of her tracks could fit well within the trance world. Her top track 'Always' was one of her first tracks that introduced a different sound for her. The original was pumped with synths and an 80s movie vibe infused with energy of how passionate the track was lyrically and emotionally. Always is a song about having a soulmate; it is a story about two people that will always love each other and who will always be there. In the Mirror has several of DJ G-String’s top tracks such as Your Love, Runaway, Always, All these Nights, and Only If. DJ G-String created the remixes for 3 of the 5 releases on this EP. She worked closely with P5YCh0h and Chriszio on 2 of the other remixes. So let's have a listen then!

REVIEW

DJ G-String opens her five track EP with 'Always Remix', a classic techno track full of sky rocketing lifts and heavy drops. This is truly a rollercoaster ride of a production. The heavy distortion of the synths bring a heaviness to the track alongside a trance inspired vocal performance. Claps, melodic bass and subtle 808s add something different to the feel of the track. As the track begins to lift again a pounding bass gets you ready for the fall. A techno meets trance creation that takes you around the world of Ibiza clubs and beyond right from her studio in Chicago. Track 2 entitled 'All These Nights Remix' keeps to the same energy but brews the listener for the peak through its slow burner of a mix. There's a real dream state provided by the vocals. Again a rollercoaster ride of production but on a smaller scale. This track is one for the heavy ravers. Track 3 entitled 'Your Love - Remix' takes you through a space shuttle and into Disney Land's Space Mountain. If there's a track that would wake you up and make you dreamy at the same time it would be this one! I like the vocals in all of these tracks, they're unique but keeps to the classic sound of dance. All of the tracks on this EP have been produced in a really effective way for the listener. Everything fits and you're taken on a journey. We all want that from music right? The penultimate track on 'In The Mirror' entitled 'Only If - P5YCH0H Remix' adds more delay to the vocals to fil the space between the bass. This works really well as it fills all the space without taking over the subtleness of the synths. Minimal but effective lyrics are repeated throughout the track. This makes room for familiarity. Ending this project is 'Runaway - Chriszio Remix' another slow burning production. We're given something to look forward to as the track builds without being left without depth to the mix. The vocals in this track are completely different to the rest of the EP. This track offers a duet that adds a sprinkle of variation to the project. If you're a fan of heavy nights out this is the ULTIMATE set of tracks to get you started. I would suggest that the artist tries sending this project to as many club DJs as you can globally, it would do really well! I caught up with DJ G- String to find out more about this project in the interview below. Make sure you check it out!

INTERVIEW

What would be your ultimate achievement for your latest single 'In The Mirror'?

I am really aiming to grow my fanbase more this year. I want my fans and new fans to see how versatile I am in music from electro house, house, disco house, trance, big room, and dance pop genres.

Is there a particular vision that you had when putting the song together?

When I write the music and lyrics in general it just happens. I don’t necessarily think about what the full vision is until I am in it. I was influenced by a lot of older trance music when I created the EP and I think you can tell that this isn’t a new style trance this is really a mix of the 90s and current.

Who was involved in the project alongside you?

I worked with P5YCh0h and Chriszio on two of the remixes on this EP.

When did you first realise that you had the potential to be an artist?

I realized in highschool really when I would thrash out on my electric guitar but I think in the dance music scene I was always drawn to the dance pop genre. Is there a memory that has stuck in your mind as the turning point for you? I wrote a song that I asked this friend of mine at the time to sing to it. She was a church gospel singer and her voice was awesome. So I sang the song and recorded it and showed her how I wanted it to be sung and she told me why aren’t you singing this? She said you have a great voice you should really consider singing on your songs. So that was the moment I decided well okay I will write, produce, compose, and sing on my tracks.

How would you define your sound?

Unique I think. I always struggle to find artists I am similar to because I think my style is a bit of 90s vibe and new vibe.

This might be a tricky one but Studio vs Live - Which do you prefer and why?

I was in a band before I came back to djing called Digging4Julie and I played bass and was the main vocalist. I always love the studio but there is a divine magic that I think happens when you are live. I love singing my own songs live when I can.

Which DAW do you prefer Cubase, Protools or none? and why?

I am a huge Protools girl. Ironically I started on Cubase like 2.5 – yes I just dated myself -ha. I loved Cubase it was a great tool but then in my early 20’s I started loving Protools with the mbox and the flexibility. I have been a user of Protools since 2002.

If you had the opportunity to work with one of your favorite musical artists, who would you most like to collaborate with and why?

Kaskade Kaskade Kaskade. First off I probably would just stare at him for a long period of time because he is just amazing. But I would love to work with him. His style of music is so driven emotionally and I have always loved that about his tracks.

What are your future plans? What can we look forward to for the rest of 2022?

I have a lot of other releases coming out this year – a remix I did for Trip P’s original track Freak Session comes out May 20th, a collab I did with TC5Official called I want you to know (original) comes out June 10th, a few cover songs I collab on with a few artists and two originals coming out at the end of the year. So about 6 more tracks.
